2008 Rafael Viñoly Architects Training in Architecture
A significant gap lies between what is taught in architecture school and what is learned through practice. The training program helps fill that gap with instruction that is informed by practice and that seeks to transmit some of this knowledge in the form of focused, comprehensible lessons. Rafael Viñoly developed the course’s original syllabus in 2005, drawing on his own experience of making buildings and his theories about architectural form, process, practice, and teaching.
After three years, Rafael Viñoly and his fellow practitioners and teachers created a new curriculum for fall 2008. In developing it, they are looking directly at the firm’s own experience in training young architects. The new curriculum was organized around a few central questions: How do architects learn to make good decisions within the context of a project, a schedule, and a budget? How do they learn what they need to know to make decisions? How do they learn what questions to ask? Like the original curriculum, it will cover every aspect of a project, from initial conceptualization through completion. Classes will be given by Rafael Viñoly and senior colleagues at the firm and will include site visits to buildings in progress. Watch this space for more information as it becomes available.
The Fall 2009 program is currently under development.
